CEL situated at the North-West
University, Potchefstroom Campus in
Hoffman Street, is a clinical testing facility
for
the substantiation of claims of efficacy
associated with cosmetic products.

It is CEL's aim to be the cosmetics efficacy testing facility
of choice, providing quality and reliable clinical evaluation and
related services to cosmetics manufacturers and regulators.

The management and well-trained staff of CEL are committed to deliver quality service and reliable results facilitated by a documented quality system consistent with good clinical practices and guided by applicable cosmetics regulatory requirements (CTFA, COLIPA and EEMCO).
CEL is an independent clinical cosmetics testing laboratory managed within the Centre for Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services section at North-West University.

The laboratory
is
environmentally controlled and possesses state-of-the-art non-invasive electronic measuring equipment for the evaluation of skin parameters related to cosmetics efficacy.

Product Claim:

Anti-age spots, anti-pigmentation, protective, soothing
Test profile:
Measuring skin colour - melanin (pigmentation) and erythema (redness) 

Product claim:
Firming, tonifying
Test profile:
• Measuring the hydration of the stratum corneum (capacitance
  method).
• Measuring skin elasticity of the upper skin layer using the suction
  method
• Measuring skin surface relief utilising SELS parameters (Surface
  Evaluation of Living Skin)
 
 

Product claim:
Moisturising, nourishing
Test profile:
• Measuring the hydration of the stratum corneum (capacitance method).
• Measuring skin surface relief utilising SELS parameters
• Measuring skin dryness (desquamation - size and quantity of corneocytes)
• The size and quantity of corneocytes.
• Measuring sebum content (skin lipids) of skin surface and secretion per surface area.

Product claim:
Repairing, restoring, protective, soothing
Test profile:
• Measuring the hydration of the stratum corneum (capacitance method).
• Measuring skin surface relief utilising SELS parameters.
• Measuring skin dryness (desquamation - size and quantity of corneocytes).
• Measuring sebum content (skin lipids) of skin surface and secretion per surface area.
• Measuring skin colour - melanin (pigmentation) and erythema (redness)
• Measuring skin temperature via touchless infrared recognition.
• Measuring skin pH.
• Measuring of trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) via close chamber method
