Hitech Lasers are warning against unregulated light-based systems
A warning extended to Australian Aesthetic device users - applicable to the South African aesthetic industry
Hitech Lasers directs a friendly yet serious warning to all users of Chinese, Korean and other unregulated light based instruments which do not comply with South African radiation control standards.
An Australian Publication: Radiation Warning: Watch Out For Cheap Chinese Machines
Danger: Chinese-made laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal machines are endangering the lives of therapists and their patients an Australian hair removal leader claims.
Chinese-made IPL and laser hair removal machine are used by as many as 60% of all beauticians and clinics in Australia.
These machines have no protective shielding used in other expensive machines and emit huge amount of radiation to anyone in the room.
According to radiation and electronic expert John Patterson, the Chinese-made machines are very dangerous.“It’s actually a danger to hold, just having it on standby. It’s spraying the radiation across the whole room” he said.
Patterson said an average mobile phone puts out about 25kH of radiation frequency whilst the Chinese-made machine he tested emitted a staggering 800,000kH.
“This is a massive danger for the person holding and using this instrument and it is extremely dangerous for the person who they’re operating on with it. That’s enormous”.
The Federal Department of Health, Federal Radiation Agency and state authorities are all denying responsibility, leaving the industry unregulated and lives at risk.

“John Patterson’s test on national television clearly demonstrated the enormous risk to anyone standing anywhere near the machine let alone using it, or being treated by it” he added.
With Australians spending approximately AU$300 million on laser, IPL and electrolysis hair removal, the inherent risk of radiation poisoning to beauticians, clinicians and members of the public is great.
The Chinese made machines can be bought at AU$14,000 as demonstrated by Tracy Grimshaw on the Current Affair Show.
A class 4 medical grade laser which is safe and effective could cost more than 10 times the price of a Chinese/Korean system. The average beautician cannot afford the expense and often opts for the cheap Chinese/Korean machines.
Shoppers be wary!
The violation of South African radiation safety regulations is as worrying here as it is in Australia.
Owners of unregulated Chinese and Korean light-based systems often approach the Hitech Lasers Group for assistance with repairs and training.
Unregulated Chinese and Korean light-based systems are often purchased via the internet, large reseller websites or directly from the manufacturers (sometimes during an exhibition).
Manufacturers of such systems offer (but seldom deliver) after-sales support or personal training in the use of the system. In practice the service and training manuals are difficult to understand, parts are difficult to obtain and it is even more difficult to replace hand pieces.Often the distributor of such systems will give the owner training on how to replace spare parts or do a service during a telephone conversation...
Although it may be more expensive to purchase a laser or light-based system from a reputable local company, the benefits are advantageous:
After sales service
Experienced advisors at your doorstep
Guarantees
Training and services offered in English
Better quality products that will out-last the cheaper products
More effective treatments
Patient and therapist safety guaranteed
In a recent edition of Aesthetic Guide the following was reported about counterfeit products from Chinese origin:“…the Chinese government has significantly strengthened its device approval process in recent years, although this has not been applied to devices exported out of China. The Chinese government does not police its locally produced counterfeits that ignore the approval and clearance process.” and “….many therapists and physicians do not understand that buying counterfeit or non-approved products is a mistake because these products are unsafe and untested when it comes to patient treatments.”
