Just in case you were wondering; frogs cannot cause warts and a nail fungus won’t simply go away if you ignore it for long enough!

So here follows some information about a few common skin ailments and how to treat them. Although unsightly, these problems are not serious and hence we live with them, hoping to find the time one day to have them treated.

What causes warts?
Warts are caused by a virus that can be found on anyone, of any age but are more commonly seen in children as their immunity is less efficient.
  • If left untreated, warts can become larger and increase in number.
  • Warts can cause social embarrassment if located on a visible part of the body.
  • On the feet painful Plantar warts (ingrown warts) can develop
  • All the above easily treated at Skin Renewal with a holistic approach, combining immune boosting supplements together and a laser procedure.
  • At Body Renewal Clinics our gold standard treatment for all types of warts is the Cutera LongPulsed Nd: YAG™ laser.

What are ‘skin tags’?
They can be described as tiny bits of skin that project from a small, narrow stalk and have been called ‘fairy nipples’ by the older generation.

  • They vary in size and appearance can appear smooth or slightly wrinkled and are generally flesh-coloured or brown.
  • They start as small bumps but can grow as large as a big grape.
  • These tags typically occur in moist friction prone areas on the neck, underarms, on the eyelids and under the breasts (especially where an underwire bra chafes), around the waist and sometimes, between the thighs.
  • Skin tags can be successfully treated by surgical removal or freezing, but can also be cauterised using the Cutera Long Pulsed Nd: YAG™ laser.

What is toe fungus/ onychomycosis?
This is a fungal infection of either the toe or finger nails.

  • This condition causes the infected nail to thicken, discolour and split.
  • Apart from being a cosmetic concern, without treatment the thickening of e.g. a toenail can cause increased pressure inside a person’s shoe which will in turn cause irritation and pain.
  • On the hands, an infected nail may cause social embarrassment and even psychological problems as a result of it looking rather ugly.
  • Convention treatment of onychomycosis/toe fungus involves months of use of prescription anti-fungal drugs, some of which are harmful to the liver
  • Treatment with the specialised pulse width of the Laser Genesis™ procedure involves one to three procedures spaced a month apart. The pulse width of this procedure destroys the fungus in by generating heat in the nail. This is combined with topical treatment to prevent relapse.
What is Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN)?
  • If I say “Morgan Freeman Spots” you will probably recognize them immediately…They are those small, dark bumps that look like moles but are probably caused by a combination of heredity, ageing and sun exposure.
  • Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) affects mainly darker skin types (Fitzpatrick 5 & 6), is located on the face, neck and trunk of both sexes and will probably increase in number and size if left untreated.
  • The spots are non-cancerous and do not have to be treated, but for aesthetic reasons, you may want to have them removed.
  • DPN spots can be successfully removed with the Nd: YAG laser and although there might be some skin discoloration afterwards, they will usually fade fairly quickly.
  • Good sun protection is necessary after treatment to prevent recurrence.
