Selling Tomatoes in the Streets to Independent Business Woman
From Selling Tomatoes In The Streets To Being An Independent Business Woman
For several years, Ntuwiseni Marubini made ends meet selling tomatoes from door to door to in the dusty streets of Thohoyandou in Venda. Her primary aim each day was to ensure she earned at least R15 so that her family had a loaf of bread for sipper. In a simple dress with no pockets, she walked several kilometres in worn out cheap sneakers barefoot as she tried to find new customers. It was while selling to a new customer that she first heard of Avon and how she could make a more sustainable income to feed her family. She traded in her tomato business for a cosmetics one and is enjoying the sweet smell of success.
The first six months were quite difficult for her but she persevered, learning about the business and networking with more women than ever before. Her persistence paid off. Within a year she had bought her first laptop and paying her two daughters university fees. She wants them to have a better life than she has had and give them opportunities that she never received growing up. With her business continuing to grow, Ntuwiseni bought her first car to enable her to cover more ground quicker and increase her customer base. With her ambition, her new car was soon raking up serious mileage. In fact her strategy worked so well that she had to buy a small truck for her business. This made transporting her products easier with the truck being more suited to the terrain. Earlier this year she bought her third car which she only uses for her family. “It’s a way of rewarding myself for all the hard work. Looking back to the days when I was selling tomatoes, I never dreamed that one day I would be able to give my children the best education possible never mind owning three cars and a comfortable home”.
Ntuwiseni is just one of over 1.3 million South Africans making a living in the growing Direct-Selling Industry. According to the Direct Selling Association (DSA) of South Africa, 79% of the industry is made up women, 83% of whom are black. One of the most attractive features of this opportunity is that it doesn’t have the barriers to entry that most business opportunities have. The industry is characterised by nominal joining fees, comprehensive training that negates the need for high-level qualifications as well as consistent growth. In 2014, the independent sales representatives within the industry shared earnings of over R4 Billion.
