Genop takes on Ellansé

The new generation of Ellansé collagen stimulators from Sinclair will now be available in South Africa through Genop Healthcare.

“We already distribute two other aesthetic dermatology products from Sinclair, namely the Perfectha dermal fillers and Silhouette Soft suspension threads, so it made perfect sense to take on Ellansé as well.

“Ellansé offers an exciting alternative to hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, in that it actually stimulates the patient’s own collagen to regenerate,” said Genop Business Unit manager, Dianne Rix, who spoke at a launch event held in Johannesburg on 22 June.

Genop’s official and internationally accredited trainer for Ellansé and Perfectha, Dr Gerhard van Niekerk, explained that while Ellansé falls into the dermal filler category, it is different in that it is a bio-stimulator.

“Sixty percent of facial ageing comes from the displacement of the fat pads and from fat atrophy. Young skin is characterised by well-organsied collagen fibres. Over time our skin gradually loses its natural collagen, which leads to facial laxity and the formation of wrinkles and folds.

“Ellansé works differently to traditional dermal fillers, which only address lines, wrinkles and folds. Thanks to its unique properties, Ellansé not only corrects wrinkles and folds but by stimulating your own collagen to treat the underlying causes of facial ageing, the effects are gradual and longer-lasting, giving you a natural youthful appearance. It’s as if you have a crack in your skin’s foundation, then we can rebuild it from the bottom up with this product,” said Van Niekerk.

There are four Ellansé options for patients to choose from, depending on the desired sustained effects of the treatment – from one year up to four years. Van Niekerk noted that in South Africa, Ellansé treatments will only be offered as the one-year or two-year options. Only a single treatment is required for any of the options.

According to Van Niekerk, there are two substances found in Ellansé, namely polycaprolactone (PLC) – small microbeads suspended in gel – and a water-based glycerine gel called carboxymethylcellulose matrix (CMC).  PLC makes up 30% of the product, with CMC the remainder.

He continued: “PLC is a re-absorbable polymer. Over time the PCL microspheres stimulate collagen – the patient will see best results six months after treatment. If you add hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, you will get a much better result. Ellansé is CE-marked and FDA-approved. Clinical studies have proved the safety, biocompatibility and efficacy of the product.”

Ellansé can be used on the temples, cheeks nasolabial folds, jawline and for malar augmentation, chin projection, nose definition and acne profiling. It is not indicated for eyelids or the frown area but can be used on the hands and neck.

In closing, Van Niekerk stressed that safety comes first at Genop; any doctor wanting to offer Ellansé treatments will have to undergo rigorous training.
